Even if you’re sober, there’s nothing fun about driving through a DUI checkpoint. It’s easy to believe that an officer will find a reason to arrest you or issue a traffic citation. And you’re right. They’re definitely on the lookout for any violation of the law.
Here are a handful of things you can do at a DUI checkpoint to protect yourself:
Slow down and obey orders: As you inch toward the officer, maintain a slow speed and do what you’re told.
Don’t say too much: The officer will ask you a variety of questions, such as to see your driver’s license and registration card. They may also ask you if you’ve been drinking. Don’t say anything in regards to alcohol consumption or where you’re going or coming from.
Don’t resist: Should the officer have reason to believe you’re under the influence of alcohol, they’ll probably ask you to get out of your vehicle. From there, they’ll request that you take a field sobriety test. Depending on the circumstances and results, this could eventually lead to your arrest. Don’t resist, as doing so increases the risk of physical harm and additional criminal charges.
The best way to protect against trouble at a DUI checkpoint is to never drink and drive. The second best way is to avoid these altogether.
If you’re arrested at a DUI checkpoint and charged with driving under the influence, you’re not in serious trouble just yet. Your day in court will come, and when it does there are steps you can take to protect your legal rights and prevent a conviction.
